Customs and Border Protection within the Dept. of Homeland Security is searching for a Supervisory Data Scientist, according to a job posting on USAJobs.gov.
This position will serve as expert analyst and advisor to senior management, with a primary function of providing objectively based information derived from the use of advanced scientific, mathematical, and statistical work to support data-driven decision making across Human Resources Management (HRM). This position is located in CBP’s Office of HRM; Planning, Program Analysis, and Evaluation Directorate; People Analytics Division, located in Washington, DC.
According to the posting, duties for the Supervisory Data Scientist include:
- Serving as a Supervisor of subject matter experts who provide data, information, statistical analysis, modeling & simulation, gathering, processing, and converting raw and unstructured data from a variety of systems and databases into clean, organized information for the highest levels of CBP leadership and other internal customers.
- Providing expertise to management through the application of advanced data science techniques, including data extraction, transformation, cleaning, modeling, machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI), to process and extract insights from structured and unstructured data and provide guidance for solutions to a variety of complex challenges to the Agency’s human capital programs that have a significant impact on personnel decisions.
- Delivering strong oral and written presentations on complex, highly analytical efforts in a simplified and clear manner to both technical and non-technical audiences. Responsible for briefing all levels and leadership and critical stakeholders to drive data-driven decision-making.
- Leading quantitative and qualitative analysis and data quality assurance using statistical software and computer programs (e.g., R, Python, Databricks). Uses various data sources to extract new information and conveys that information in a manner that is appropriate to the technical knowledge of the audience. Solving statistical problems that occur in data collection and summarization processes.
- Providing thought leadership and expertise in utilizing Business Intelligence tools (e.g., Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, Cognos, Qlik Sense) to analyze and visualize complex data. Demonstrating expert-level abilities to leverage Business Intelligence tools to enable self service or direct access analytics, to simplify and synthesize data, and to facilitate nontechnical leaders’ ingestion of data and key insights.
