GAO Publishes Spotlight Report on Generative AI Systems

Taka Ariga, Chief Data Scientist at the US Government Accountability Office (GAO), announced on LinkedIn that the GAO has published a Science & Tech Spotlight report on Generative AI. The full report can be found on the GAO website.

The Spotlight report examines the technology behind Generative AI systems like ChatGPT and Bard that can easily create text, images, audio, video, and other content. The report describes challenges with Generative AI systems including “hallucinations” — misinformation that seems credible — and that these systems can be used to purposefully create false information. Other challenges include oversight and privacy concerns. With the European Union already publishing draft legislation to govern AI systems, the U.S. may not be far behind.
