NITRD Releases Major Update to 2016 Big Data R&D Strategic Plan

The Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) program published “Innovating the Data Ecosystem: An Update of The Federal Big Data Research and Development Strategic Plan”, which updates the first Big Data R&D Strategic Plan published in 2016. The updated strategy document responds to recent changes in the fed data landscape, particularly the increased demand for AI initiatives. The report was developed by the NITRD’s Big Data Interagency Working Group.

The new strategy document updates the vision and strategies on big data R&D laid out in the 2016 Strategic Plan through six pillars that enhance data value and reusability, and responsiveness to federal policies on data sharing and management:

1. Enhance the reusability and integrity of data
2. Enable innovative, user-driven data science
3. Develop and enhance the robustness of the federated ecosystem
4. Prioritize privacy, confidentiality, ethics, and security
5. Develop necessary expertise and diverse talent
6. Enhance U.S. global leadership
