The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has developed a taxonomy to address the challenge of finding federal data. This taxonomy aims to make DOL data more accessible and understandable, enhancing integration with other data sources and maximizing value for stakeholders.
The DOL recognized difficulties in locating desired data due to varying access modes, documentation quality, and support services. Public search terms often did not match DOL’s technical language. To make data more findable, the DOL’s Office of Data Governance (ODG) and Data Board initiated a plain-language system for data description, involving comprehensive reviews and categorization efforts. These tools simplify searches by providing predictable categories and a complete set of searchable terms, aiding users in efficiently discovering relevant DOL data sets.
The page offers downloadable files with DOL’s tags, keywords, and controlled vocabulary in Excel and CSV formats, facilitating easier identification and location of data sets.
