The Supervisory Data Scientist position coordinates closely with the CDO within the Department of Commerce’s Office of the Under Secretary for Economic Affairs (OUSEA), located in Washington, DC. Oliver Wise is Commerce’s current CDO. (The ZP 5 pay scale for this position, under the Dept. of Commerce’s Alternative Personnel System, is equivalent to a GS 15 grade.)

According to the posting, duties for the Supervisory Data Scientist include:

  • The Deputy Chief Data Officer serves as expert advisor to the Chief Data Officer in the development, oversight, and management of DOC data strategy and related action plans.
  • The Deputy Chief Data Officer will share with the CDO the responsibility for providing leadership in carrying out Department-wide responsibilities in data governance, data strategy, and management of the data lifecycle.
  • Provides strategic direction for and technical assistance on a wide range of data science-related functions.
  • Establishes effective alliance and partnership with high-level program managers and executives across the department to direct and manage data-related projects.
  • Manages strategic data projects to meet Departmental business needs.
