Eric Hysen

Eric Hysen has served as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) since early 2021 and was appointed as the Department’s first Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO) in mid 2023.

As the DHS CAIO, Hysen will promote AI innovation and safety within the Department and chairs the DHS Artificial Intelligence Task Force. As CIO, Mr. Hysen is responsible for strategically aligning the DHS’s IT personnel resources and assets, including security, infrastructure, and delivery, to support core DHS missions and activities.

Hysen previously served on the Biden-Harris transition Technology Strategy & Delivery team and was a Senior Fellow at the National Conference on Citizenship. He also worked in state government, helping to launch the California Office of Digital Innovation. Prior, he served as the Executive Director of the Department of Homeland Security Digital Service during the Obama administration and was a founding member of the U.S. Digital Service in the White House.
