Loren Groff

Loren Groff is the Chief Data Scientist and Chief Data Officer at the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). As the Chief Data Scientist and Chief Data Officer, Loren is responsible for supporting the agency-wide effort to better utilize data for strategic decision-making. He is also responsible for the application of machine learning and advanced data science methods and techniques to support agency investigations and research, analysis, and reporting of emerging transportation safety trends. 

Before joining the NTSB, Loren worked as a Regional Airline Pilot. He has been with the NTSB since 2002 and has held various positions within the organization. Loren has also served as a National Resource Specialist and Transporation Research Analyst at the NTSB. 

The NTSB is divided into several divisions, including the Office of the Managing Director, which is responsible for coordinating the activities of the entire NTSB staff, managing volunteer activities, handling interagency coordination, and recommending and developing plans to achieve operating plan objectives. The Chief Data Officer supports the agency-wide effort to better utilize data for strategic decision-making and is responsible for the application of machine learning and advanced data science methods and techniques to support agency investigations and research, analysis, and reporting of emerging transportation safety trends. 

Loren has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a PhD in Human Factors Psychology from Wichita State University. He is also a Gold Seal flight instructor and has an associate degree in Aviation from Hesston College.
